‘Shedding’ the kilos for good health

A group of Men’s ‘Shedders’ is getting their health and wellbeing back on track, thanks to the My health for life initiative.

Eight members of the Mount Gravatt Men’s Shed took part in My health for life and are reaping the rewards.

Welfare Officer Stephen said while the participants had the knowledge about healthy eating and exercise they just needed some encouragement.

“I hadn’t been exercising or eating the way I should, so I thought I should get on and do it,” Steve said. “The program was just the motivation I needed to do something.”

Steve has gone from feeling out of breath after walking for 2 minutes, to walking ‘6 to 8 kms, no problems’. He’s also lost more than 8kgs.

“I am feeling better – a lot fitter and I can do more because of it,” he said.

Steve said the no cost, no pressure style of the initiative was a big incentive.

“Our coach had done the initiative herself so she really understood our perspective, and was very down to earth and approachable,” he said. ‘There was no pressure, just good advice, support, guidance and encouragement.”

Steve said he was proud of the participants for what they had achieved through My health for life.

“It’s easy to slacken off and this was a really easy way to get back into it and focus on our health. It’s a wonderful initiative.”

Men’s Shed member and My health for life participant Pat praised Health Coach, Sarah.

“Sarah’s enthusiasm was infectious, the knowledge gained was very helpful and both of those things were inspirational,” he said. “I believe the diet aspects are now the new normal, and as the knee improves the exercise will take up again.”

Participant John lost 5kgs and got back into walking.

“I’m currently doing the RFDS fundraiser so will be walking at least 80kms this month. I also re-started using the exercise bike and some stretching.”

My health for life  is all about making healthier choices and creating healthier habits that you can live with.
