Turning setbacks into stepping stones – Liz’s path to success

For Liz, late-night snacking and sweet cravings felt like hurdles she couldn’t overcome. As someone who stayed active with regular walking and bootcamp sessions, Liz felt stuck when her weight crept up despite her efforts. Alongside growing concerns for her long-term health and wellbeing, she began to feel defeated.

“I was doing as much as I could on the exercise front, but I wasn’t seeing results,” Liz said. “It was incredibly frustrating.”

Determined to turn things around, Liz started researching programs that could help her make sustainable changes. That’s when she discovered My Health for Life. “I found the program online and decided to give it a try. It seemed like a trusted and structured approach that I could commit to,” she explained.

Liz joined the initiative and was paired with a supportive Health Coach, Megan, who helped her focus on realistic, incremental goals. Together, they worked on strategies to address Liz’s challenges, like eliminating late-night snacking and shifting to a more mindful approach to eating.

“One of the first things Megan suggested was to be mindful about why I wanted to snack at night,” Liz shared. “She encouraged me to think about whether I was really hungry or just eating out of habit. That shift from mindless to mindful eating made all the difference.”

Using small, actionable goals and the guidance from the initiative’s coaching booklet, Liz gradually made changes to her lifestyle. She added more vegetables and protein to her meals, increased her water intake to 1.5–2 litres daily, and replaced sugary treats with fresh fruit to manage her sweet tooth.

On the exercise front, Megan encouraged Liz to incorporate strength training into her routine. Although she initially found it intimidating, breaking it into manageable sessions helped her build confidence and even enjoy the process. “I started with short, simple workouts at home and later tried some free strength classes offered by Brisbane City Council,” Liz said.

These small changes quickly added up. Liz began to see significant improvements in her overall health, including higher energy levels and better results from her blood tests. Most importantly, she felt a shift in her mindset.

“I used to be so impatient and discouraged by setbacks,” Liz said. “Now, I understand that progress isn’t a straight line—it’s about consistency and sticking with it even when things don’t go perfectly.”

The initiative also taught Liz the importance of sleep. “I was short-changing myself with only six hours a night. Now, I make it a priority to get at least seven hours, and I feel so much better for it,” she explained.

With her new habits firmly in place, Liz feels more confident and less burdened by the constant worry about her weight and health. “It’s freed up so much mental energy,” she said. “Now I can focus on other things without that nagging feeling in the back of my mind.”

Looking ahead, Liz is determined to continue her progress and reach her goal weight. She remains motivated by the tools she’s learned and the support she received during the initiative.

“It’s been life-changing to have someone invest time and care in my health journey,” Liz said. “The program reminded me that it’s not about drastic changes—it’s about small, sustainable steps that add up over time.”
