After meeting Mandy in our first blog, you might be wondering what it’s actually like to work with a First Nations Health Coach, and what happens during your time in My health for life.
The good news? You’re in control of your journey. There’s no pressure, no strict rules, and no one size fits all approach. Instead, My health for life is about building on your strengths and taking small, realistic steps to improve wellbeing in ways that respect culture, family, and community, with Mandy walking alongside you every step of the way.
Here’s what participants can expect across the six sessions.
What happens during the six sessions?
Session 1: Explore your healthy
Session one is all about getting to know you and what your version of healthy looks like.
Mandy takes time to understand your lifestyle, culture, family commitments, and what wellbeing means to you right now. Together, you’ll talk through what you’d like to work on, whether that’s having more energy, feeling stronger, eating better, or simply carving out more time for yourself.
“There’s no judgement,” Mandy says. “We start with what’s realistic for you and build from there.”
Session 2: Find your why
In this session, you and Mandy explore why making changes is important to you.
Understanding your motivation helps shape goals that feel meaningful and sustainable, whether it’s being there for family, improving confidence, or feeling better day-to-day. This ‘why’ becomes something you can return to when things feel challenging.
“When you know why you’re doing this, it’s easier to keep going,” Mandy says.
Session 3: Plan for success
Here, Mandy helps you break your goals down into simple, manageable steps that fit into real life.
Rather than doing everything at once, the focus is on small steps you can realistically achieve, building confidence as you go and creating habits that work for you.
Mandy describes her approach as “Listening to your story, recognising your strengths, and cocreating changes you can actually live with.”
Session 4: Need a Plan B?
This session is about planning for when setbacks happen. Together, you’ll talk through strategies to help you get back on track. You can also explore simple ways to reward yourself when things are going well.
“Setbacks happen; what matters is the next step,” Mandy says.
Session 5: What’s next?
By now, you’ve already made changes, sometimes more than you realise.
This session is a chance to reflect on how far you’ve come, what’s working well, and what you might still want to focus on. Mandy can also support you to revisit or dive deeper into topics from your workbooks, depending on what feels most helpful.
Connection and reflection are key, Mandy says, “Health isn’t a quick fix. It’s ongoing care for self, kin, community, and country.”
Session 6: Looking ahead
The final session is about reflecting on progress and building confidence to keep going.
Together, we’ll look at what you’ve learned, celebrate wins (big or small), and create a simple plan to help you stay on track after My health for life finishes.
“It’s about feeling confident you can keep making healthy choices in your own way,” Mandy says.
