  • It is believed that many Australians are now sitting more hours than they sleep. The average Australian now sits on average 6.3 hours per day. The World Health Organisation warns physical inactivity now ranks as the fourth largest killer globally.
  • The Australian Beverage Council plans to cut sugar in its products by 20 per cent by 2025 – Queenslanders remain big consumers of sugary drinks.
  • A global review, undertaken by the George Institute of Global Health, has found that diabetes raises the risk of cancer. The review involved almost 20 million people. Other findings included that the risk of cancer was six times higher for women with diabetes than it was with men. My health for life is a healthy lifestyle program developed to help people improve their health and lessen their risk of developing chronic disease, such as type 2 diabetes and even some cancers.
  • If you are over 45, the Heart Foundation says it is time to get a heart health check. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women the recommended age is 35. What’s involved? The doctor will do blood tests, check your blood pressure and talk to you about your lifestyle and family history to help assess your risk of heart disease.
