There are lots of passing fads when it comes to so-called superfoods. However, pomegranates are not one of them.
Pomegranates have been around since the 16th century and are popular in many countries. It is just that it has taken Australians a little time to catch on. But now that we have, this superfruit is enjoying new popularity.
Here are some things about pomegranates you might not know.
- These attractive fruits were once used as medicine because they were considered so rich in nutrients.
- Pomegranates are packed with fibre, lots of vitamin C, vitamin E, folate, potassium and antioxidants.
- Those little red jewel-like seeds inside are called arils – weird, we know.
- Australia produces about 4000 tonnes of pomegranates – some are even grown in Queensland. However, we also import as many as we grow.
- Aside from juice, pomegranates are delicious in salad, fruit salad, guacamole, and in some drinks. They are great served on fish and chicken.
- To pick a ripe one, make sure the skin is relatively unblemished and is bright red or dark red in colour. Some people also recommend you pick the heaviest you can find.
- To remove the arils, score the middle of the fruit with a sharp knife and then pull apart. Over a bowl, tap the back of one half with a wooden spoon or the back of a soup spoon. Squeeze a little to ease the seeds out.
- Pomegranates are best stored in the fridge and you can freeze the seeds as long as they are in an airtight container.
